Alex Bowers for Cambridge School Committee
Stories, I have Stories....
I covered the Cambridge Public Schools for the Cambridge Day newspaper for more than five years. Writing these stories gives me a unique perspective on the schools, which I hope to bring to the school committee.
There are so many stories. I covered a Community Iftar where hundreds of people gathered to share a halal meal and Ramadan prayer in March 2023, and tasted ‘Sea-weedish meatballs" at CRLS in June 2023 when the student-led Project Greenplate put kelp meatballs on the menu as an alternative to meat.
Many stories centered on Covid-19 pandemic, covering the shut down of society and the efforts to support student learning and family needs. A debate on when to open schools to in-person learning in January 2021 was marked by the death of James “Jimmy” Ravanis from Covid-19 the month before.
One of my sentimental favorites is a surprisingly lyrical story about a snow day in 2022 that gave the community a respite when a plan to test staff and students for Covid-19 after winter break collapsed.
There were stories that were less happy, as a surge in the bullying of trans and other LGBTQIA+ kids as schools reopened in Spring 2022. More than fifty educators declined to administer MCAS tests In June 2021, but only two educators were suspended in a move that was widely perceived as unfair.
There were many stories about school committee debates and decisions over the years. Disappointment in an upper school’s Algebra test scores will sound familiar in a story from September 2019. School committee members who didn’t respect each other, letting personal animosity get in the way of setting solid policy in December 2019. Numerous stories of tension between Superintendents, School Committee members, the Cambridge Educators Association.
The more the World changes, the more it stays the same. But it doesn't have to be this way - we can do better.
